Diet, exercise & cashflow...

What could they possibly have in common?

This blog probably refers more to men that women, however since most business owners are men, I guess that is appropriate.

In these enlightened days. most of us are increasingly aware of what what constitutes good diet) though advice often conflicts and confuses. In particular misunderstand the relationship between diet and exercise. Both are good, both are important and there is some relationship between the 2. So presumable it is OK to drink beer & eat chips as long as I go to the gym?

Hmmmm...  Both are certainly important, but diet just trumps exercise for long term health.

Some of us will take extreme measures to cover all of the bases - healthy living will become a life mantra, some will achieve a working balance between healthy living and occasional indulgence. Together those factions will add up to a visible minority.

The remainder of us, will be aware of what we should be doing and will have sporadic purges of health living - typically starting on 1st January - no fatty foods, on the wagon for a month, join the gym etc etc etc..

These purges will typically be triggered either by a period of excess and guilt (Christmas), a period of introspection (time off), or least desirable, by a health scare.

So what on earth has that to do with cashflow?

You may be ahead of me here..

Every business owner understands that there is a thing called cashflow and that it is important. But then, so is important & that is east to calculate - it's the difference between what you buy for & what you sell for. So if I get that right the cashflow will sort itself out?

You've discovered Experian & you are definitely going to run checks on every customer before you offer then credit. Definitely.  Expect Bill Blogs - I've known him for years & he drives a Bentley. But I will do the others, with just a few exceptions.

New Year - time to chase up all those outstanding debtors - and this time I will keep right on top of them. Definitely. It's a bit of a pain making all those phone calls, isn't it?

Or the health scare - yes, a call from the bank or, worse still - no call from the bank, just a returned item and an irate call from a supplier. Put on stop - unable to fulfill an order. Hopefully not terminal, but certainly problematic...

Both can be resolved..

You can exercise yourself slim, but the sugar will still stretch you pancreas, the fat will sit in your arteries and the additives will attack your systems.

You can have great profits, but your business can die quickly from bad cashflow.

Fortunately, unlike diet there are lots of ways to handle cashflow without spoiling your enjoyment of life.

Like diet, however, early action means prevention, which is always better than a cure!
